I just finished sailing on MSC’s newest ship, World America, and it was a one-of-a-kind experience! As the largest in MSC’s fleet to date, it was nearly impossible to see and do everything onboard—but that also meant there was something exciting around every corner.
MSC’s food has faced criticism in the past, but personally, I’ve always found it to be delicious. That said, food is subjective! Beyond the main dining room and two buffets, World America introduces several new complimentary spots to grab a bite: Pizza & Burger, Promenade Bites, and Harbor Bites—there’s no shortage of food onboard.
For those wanting to elevate their dining experience, the ship offers an impressive selection of specialty restaurants (at an additional cost). Alongside MSC classics like Butcher’s Cut and Teppanyaki, new additions include Kaito Sushi, Paxos, and Eataly.
We tried both Paxos and Eataly. Paxos, a beautifully themed Greek-style restaurant, served unique but enjoyable food. We had a lunch reservation but unfortunately didn’t get to try any of their signature drinks since the bar wasn’t staffed at the time.
Eataly had an elegant atmosphere and top-notch service, though it was a bit slower than expected. While the main course wasn’t my favorite, the appetizer and dessert were delightful. Fun fact: the small drink served before dessert is a palate cleanser—fancy! Note that Eataly charges a $5 per person cancellation fee if you miss your reservation without canceling at least six hours in advance. We learned this the hard way after getting caught up at the spa, but fortunately, we were able to reschedule for the evening.
Overall, I’m glad we tried both restaurants, but I probably wouldn’t dine there again. Still, you might love them—everyone’s taste is different!
We mostly dined in the main dining room, and everything I had was delicious. While I was bummed we didn’t get to try Sweet Temptations, I satisfied my sweet tooth at Jean Philippe’s with a hot chocolate martini (not included in any drink package) and some amazing gelato.
The Coffee Emporium became our daily go-to for caffeine. A common question was whether the coffee here is covered with the drink package. We had the Premium Drink Package, which covered drinks up to $16—and yes, the coffees at the Emporium were included!
Our package also covered juices at the Zest Juice Bar, though we didn’t get a chance to try them. With so many bars onboard, each offering unique atmospheres and signature drinks, you’ll never go thirsty. I loved relaxing at Masters of the Sea, which brews its own beer right onboard—a cool bonus! While I’m not a beer drinker, others around me had great things to say.
If you’re not into signature cocktails, don’t worry—you can order classics anywhere. My go-to? The Peach on the Beach! The only bars where our package came up short were Elixir and Dolce Vita, where many drinks were priced at $18.
Entertainment options were endless. There were multiple showings of each performance throughout the cruise, and different shows were available on the same day—this definitely helped with crowd control.
Our favorite show? Dirty Dancing—do not miss it! A close second was Queen Symphonic, but truly, all the shows were fantastic. Pro tip: Book your shows as soon as you board. Several were already sold out just a couple of days in.
We also attended the 18+ comedy show in The Loft, featuring Frank Townsend and Jim Colliston—absolutely hilarious! Fair warning: they do pick on audience members, so if that’s not your thing, sit in the back.
If shows aren’t your style, there’s plenty more: bumper cars, basketball, Cliffhanger, Jaw Drop Slide, water slides, a floating obstacle course, arcade, roller skating, live music (including Dueling Pianos), themed parties, and a casino. MSC really packed this ship with activities.
Each bar on the ship offers something special. We especially enjoyed Masters of the Sea, with live music and onboard-brewed beer. Another standout? The hidden speakeasy. Not everyone gets in—you need a special coin or invite, and drinks aren’t covered by any drink package. Rumor has it only 100 coins are handed out daily, so be nice to the bar staff!
Once inside, you’ll need to purchase at least one drink (mostly bourbon, whiskey, and gin-based). Even if those aren’t your favorites, the presentation is top-notch, and the atmosphere is electric. Our server, Rebecca, made the whole experience unforgettable.
Wow—MSC really upped their spa game on World America. I purchased the cruise-long spa pass, and it was worth every penny. From the relaxing whirlpool and waterfall to the salt room, steam room, snow room, and a unique cold/warm foot bath, it was heaven. After a long day exploring Puerto Rico, that foot bath was a lifesaver.
I also booked an 80-minute Balinese massage in advance—fantastic! I added a hand collagen mask and a dry scalp massage and left feeling like a brand-new person. There are plenty more spa amenities I didn’t even get to try. If I had unlimited funds, I’d be there daily!
MSC nailed some thoughtful details, like motion-activated doors in the public bathrooms and sensor-based condiment and drink stations at the buffet—super convenient and hygienic.
During the welcome-back party for returning guests, Captain Dino shared some incredible ship features. Two things that stood out: World America runs on natural gas, making it one of the most eco-friendly ships in the industry. Plus, the propellers are designed to reduce sound frequencies to avoid disturbing marine life. How cool is that?
We also rented a poolside cabana, and it was a game changer in the Caribbean heat. Our half-day rental ($69) included shaded seating, a bottle of Prosecco, a light lunch, and snacks (we chose shrimp cocktail, a chicken sandwich, and gelato—yum!). Ours faced the ocean and was next to a hot tub—highly recommend.
The ship is still new, so some hiccups are expected. Staff are still finding their rhythm, and the language barrier can be frustrating. As Cruise Director Dr. E reminded us, for many crew members, English is their third or fourth language—so be patient and kind.
They were also out of several items after just a couple of days. For example, at The Gin Project, they didn’t have my second or third gin choices, which was a little disappointing. Hopefully, this improves as they better gauge onboard demand.
Despite a few growing pains, the overall vibe was fantastic. World America is stunning—from the breathtaking World Promenade to the many lounges and quiet corners, it never felt overwhelmingly crowded, even over Memorial Weekend.
Whether you're a partygoer, foodie, show-lover, or someone seeking total relaxation, this ship has something for everyone. We had an incredible time and can’t wait to sail aboard MSC World America again. If you’re considering a cruise, I highly recommend giving her a try—you won’t be disappointed.
